Portfolio 2021

As the Design Supervisor at Hunter Industries, I motivate my team to be the best in-house creative agency in the Irrigation, Lighting, and Outdoor Living Industry.

I accomplish this by looking through the eyes of our audiences and customers. My goal is to always elevate the look and polish of our work, but also the function and delivery of our projects. I’m continually excited by new software, processes, and the latest technologies. These new tools and advances give us an advantage over other organizations. But my process of thoughtful design guide my choices more than any technology.

Shared distinction of the following awards:

2019 Exhibitor Magazine, All-Star Award (Designer)

Brand Identity

Dispensing Dynamics joined Hunter Industries in 2017 to share in the success and future of both companies.

While working on this project I distilled the client’s mark and history into its most basic parts. Nested inside of the interlocking rings of their original mark was something entirely new.

This new mark gave the client a sense of history, growth, and progression.

Working with small businesses, groups, charities, and friends is a great outlet for new ideas and experimentation.

Giving each project the chance to be new and different from the last one. These projects represent the refinement of my own design process.

  1. Competitive analysis
  2. Conceptual brief
  3. Critique and refinement
  4. Self-doubt, nail-biting, and polish
  5. Final delivery

Environmental Design

Using your brand out in the world can be one of the most fun and challenging things.

What textures, patterns, and materials represent the brand, how do we make that reproducible around the world?

The examples here are from concept to completion designs that I had to sell to our organization and work with internal production teams to ensure an accurate and timely installation.

For businesses environmental design most commonly comes up during trade shows. How should I feel, where should I go, and what should I do(?) are all questions that need to be answered as quickly as possible at any show.

Hunter’s trade show team answered all of those questions and brought more products to shows through digital content instead of physical examples.

Working with fabricators and developers we created a 50’ x 50’ space for customers to come to play with our app, devices, and product information.

The app includes over 2,300 individual crafted pieces of content and the booth includes 35 beautiful graphics.

Digital and User Interface Design

Motivating contractors that don’t adopt new technology easily is a challenge in the irrigation, lighting, and outdoor living industry. Convincing a general contractor that the applications we create are reliable, trustworthy, and good for their business takes not only good design but product education.

The Hydrawise drip email campaign was designed to instill trust in our service and help them grow their business through our mobile water management software.

Digital and User Interface Design

The ACC2 is the most capable irrigation controller in the industry. I worked with the firmware and software engineers to help with navigation, color scheme, information priority, and a full suite of custom icons.

The LCD screen and static buttons created an interesting design challenge. Limitations included face pack storage limitations for my files, bitmap rendering of my designs, color calibration, and color accuracy.

Art Direction and Theme

Working in-house it can be tough to find new ideas and inspiration. Finding the next big thing or fun new idea takes being fearless and vulnerable. After all your clients are used to seeing the same colors, typefaces, and designs.

These projects are all examples of finding something new and fun through all of that normative corporate design.

Product Illustration and Education

Hunter creates some amazing products and I use them around my own home every day. But, for those of us who aren’t that savvy or aren’t convinced that a Wi-Fi irrigation or lighting controller is going to save them any time or make them any money. You need to foster trust and give the customer a great experience by create educational materials that are clear, concise, and easy to follow.

Documents like this have been more enjoyable than I ever thought they could be. It’s like being a kid again and following step-by-step in the instructions of a Lego building toy.

Foster trust and give the customer a great experience.

Marketing and Product Literature

The documents displayed here are your everyday, labor intensive, collaborative projects. Working on these means working with product experts, customer focused sales teams, and other designers for critique.

The Hunter Product Catalog represents leadership and growth to me. This project takes 20% less time than it used to and is easier to accomplish because of those efforts.
Other team members can take this project on to succeed and grow as designers.

During my ownership of the project each document was over 220 pages long, translated in nine languages, and was full of great design.

Thank you.

While I wear my hair differently and own fewer turtlenecks my passion for creative work has been a constant. My goal is to use my creativity to solve the challenges presented to me. No matter what direction my career takes.

Thank you for your interest in my work. I’m always interested in new opportunities and collaborations.
